is a patented form of Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) use to break down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. The technique involves 6 stainless steel instruments of differing shapes and sizes to effectively detect and treat areas of soft tissue fibrosis (scarring) or chronic inflammation.
The stainless steel Graston Technique instruments act like a stethoscope enhancing the doctors at Bergen Chiropractic and Sports Rehabilitation Center ability to detect fascial adhesions and restrictions. Graston Technique has been clinically proven to achieve quicker and better outcomes in treating a number of different acute and chronic injuries including:
- Lumbar Sprain/Strain (back pain)
- Cervical Sprain/Strain (whiplash, neck pain)
- Rotator Cuff Injuries (shoulder pain)
- Lateral Epicondylopathy (tennis elbow)
- Medial Epicondylopathy (golfer’s elbow)
- Trigger Finger
- Patellofemoral Disorders (knee pain)
- Achilles Tendinopathy (tendon pain at back of ankle)
- Plantar Fasciitis (bottom of foot and heel pain)
- Tibial Stress Syndromes (shin splints)
- Post-surgical and Traumatic Scar Pain
Active Release Technique (ART)
is a soft tissue system incorporating a movement based protocol system to treat injuries and restrictions with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.
The doctors at Bergen Chiropractic and Sports Rehabilitation Center use their hands to evaluate the texture, tone, tightness, and restrictions of the soft tissue. Dysfunctional muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves are treated by combining directionally specific soft tissue contacts with a number of tissue-selective movement patterns.
ART is effective at treating injuries including:
- Back and Neck Pain
- Knee Injuries
- Shoulder Pain
- Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow
- Plantar Fasciitis

FAKTR stands for “Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehabilitation, Provocation and Motion.” FAKTR is a soft tissue concept to be utilized with a number of soft tissue techniques to speed the healing time of acute and chronic injuries of the musculoskeletal and fascial systems.
FAKTR works in three major methods:
By stimulating certain pathways in the nervous system Dr. Doerr is able to normalize the tone of overactive or underactive muscles. Through sensory, motor and proprioceptive stimulation, the doctors at Bergen Chiropractic and Sports Rehabilitation Center are able bombard the central nervous system with a tremendous amount of afferent (from the periphery to the central nervous system) input. This bombardment is like hitting control alt delete on your computer effectively rebooting your nervous system and restoring proper tone to the tissue.
Through specific local treatments, the doctors at Bergen Chiropractic and Sports Rehabilitation Center are able to influence the healing process on injured and degenerating tissues. Through these specific types of treatment, it is possible to increase the proliferation of the cells of healing and remodel injured tissue into a healthy state. This would be similar to re-attaching fibers of a rope freighting from the inside out.
My changing the type of treatment intensity, it is possible to turn soft tissue treatments into an anti-inflammatory treatment. Through light very gentile treatments, the doctors at Bergen Chiropractic and Sports Rehabilitation Center are able to effect superficial blood flow to a region assisting in the reduction of swelling, bruising, bursitis, post-surgical pain, and areas of heightened sensitivity.
FAKTR combines soft tissue treatments with resistance training, functional activities, and proprioceptive (balance and coordination) exercises to produce faster results than conventional treatment methods. FAKTR is designed to reduce pain and restore function. Most patients notice improvements in their pain, ROM, or ability to perform sports on their first treatment.
FAKTR, formerly called FAKTR-PM, was developed by Gregory H Doerr, DC and Thomas E Hyde, DC in 2002 and is currently taught throughout the United States, Canada, Latin America, South America, Australia, and Europe.
